Event Details

  • Meet at the main parking lot (east side middle of the reservoir). From New Castle, turn onto Seventh Street and stay on it as it turns into Midland Avenue/Buford Road (County Road 245). Continue along this county road for about five miles, and keep left when it turns into Grass Valley Road (County Road 226) for about three miles. Turn left onto Harvey Gap Road and drive about one mile to the parking lot on the right-hand side.

We will explore around Harvey Gap Reservoir and see what birds we can find. We may drive around the reservoir to another parking lot midway through the trip for a different vantage point if needed. This reservoir is an easy place to see water birds relaxing and other passerines flitting about. We will find grebes, teals, goldeneyes, ducks and gulls galore. More birds we’ll likely see are warblers, sparrows, finches, flycatchers, thrushes and wrens, among others.

Bring warm layers, water, sun protection and snacks.

Let Stephanie know if you need a binocular. If you have a spotting scope, bring it along!
